YouTube launches new feature for Indian users – will show more content in local languages

Keeping in mind its Indian users, YouTube launches new feature that will show more local language content under ‘Home’ and ‘Trending’ sections.

On the home page, after automatically identifying the preferred Indian language, YouTube will show more content ranging from Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, and Kannada. User’s interface, watch history, language and location make up for the factors in deciding the language preference that YouTube shows.

Languages that YouTube picks could be changed to a preferred language from the drop-down menu at the bottom of YouTube’s page. If not required, the user can continue watching more videos in that language and YouTube will gradually correct itself.

“On Home, you will see more local language content such as movies and music, especially if you’re a first time user. If you’re an existing YouTube user, you will continue to receive great recommendations based on what you watch. Trending will now show trending videos based on your local language. For example, if you have indicated preference for Tamil, Trending will contain videos that are trending amongst Tamil-speaking users in India,” is how YouTube explained the feature.

The last update from YouTube, for its users in India, was YouTube Go app that was announced by Google in September. The app enables users to save videos for offline viewing and choose resolution while streaming or saving videos. The feature was rolled out in India after YouTube witnessed the conditions of poor connectivity in the country.
