Big Gig Exclusive Festival Line-Up Announced
The Big Gig Exclusive announces its line-up for the festival on April 19. soundplunge_test finds out more about this acoustic world folk festival in the hills.
The Big Gig Mussoorie has finally announced its line-up for its third edition, a pleasant mix of artists from the acoustic, folk and blues worlds, just right for the misty mountains up in Landour, Mussoorie. Scheduled to happen on April 19, this edition will see Prateek Kuhad Collective, The Okies, Run! It’s The Kid, The Bootleg Browns, Dhruv Visvanath Trio, The Lyres, Raagleela and Mame Khan performing at this hill festival.
Landour is a cantonment town in old Musoorie, away from the weary bustle of the city, yet alive in its cosmopolitan atmosphere. A curious history that the town possesses, being an old British cantonment, and a settlement place for American missionaries, has added to its charm with folk-indie music being a key part of the local flavour.
The Bootleg Browns, local blues band, and The Okies from Atlanta are coming back this year as well after their successful presence at Big Gig last year. With the international acts, audiences will get a taste of local music as well, with the The Lyres, a Woodstock school band also performing alongside.
Mame Khan, known for his riveting folk music, with the range and power of a true Rajasthani folk singer’s voice will also be performing giving the audience a glimpse of world music. Delhi based singer-songwriter Dhruv Visvanath will be present with his band The Dhruv Visvanath Trio, as will Raagleela, who recently headlined the Band of the Year event at Kingdom of Dreams, Delhi.
Prateek Kuhad, the voice behind his latest album Raat Raazi has been performing all over the world, including New Orleans, New York and Prague, and has collaborated with the who’s who of the music industry. He counts Nick Drake to Jimi Hendrix as his influences, and growing up as a guitarist in Jaipur, he is well versed with Hindustani Classical Music. Having learnt jazz in Prague, he fits well within the genre of world music.
The one day festival will be a gala with an eclectic collection of food stalls and shops to add to the festivities. The Purkal Stree Shakti, an organisation that works towards community development and women empowerment in Dehradun, will put up a stall at the venue too.
