“Jaja”, new single by Mayookh Bhowmick, promises a new sound for the widening non-film musical arena

The first song from Black Coffee, Kolkata based electro/classical musician Mayookh Bhowmick’s upcoming album released this Wednesday, December 11. The debut single “Jaja” has Indian classical tenets at its core, which has then been layered with multiple forms of electronica. “Jaja is basically my life encapsulated in 7 minutes. I hope people are able to hear that journey,” says Mayookh. The song is a collaborative effort with vocals by Ishita Chakravarty and Ambarish Das, esraj by Shubhayu Sen Majumder. The composition and tabla has been done by Mayookh. It has been mixed by RajStar at RVM Sounds, Edison, New Jersey.

In a unique juxtaposition, the song has been arranged like a sonata, with three distinct shifts. Jaja, Mayookh Bhowmick says, “..is a futuristic bass/trap take on an Indian Classical composition.”

Mayookh comes from an exalted tradition of music. Having been declared a child prodigy by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan at the age of four, he was a studio musician by the age of 12, even registering an original string instrument by the age of seven. In the past, Mayookh has collaborated with musicians of the order of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Oteil Burbridge, the twice Grammy winning jazz musician from Washington. Mayookh himself was also nominated as a Grammy associate by NARAS, the youngest musician to have received that honour.

Jaja sounds promising for electronic and fusion lovers alike. The rest of the album is going to be something to look forward to with this brand new song, which offers a delightful restraint, qualitatively pure in its musicality.
