“You think you’re fooling us now, with your fancy pants campaign. Ambani money in your pocket, creating problems in town” goes one of the lines of Delhi-based ska-dub collective The Ska Vengers’ latest single titled “Modi, A Message to You”, which was released over the weekend on April 6. Less than a week away from the voting day, the catchy Jamaican-style single vociferously speaks about all that Modi has been notorious for, including his alleged involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots and his allegiance with the Ambanis for funding among other reasons that should supposedly have kept him in jail. The song takes its inspiration from a 1967 single “A Message to You, Rudy” by reggae artist Danny Livingstone.
The video, animated by Kunal Sen and Tisha Deb Pillai, contains satirical imagery complementing the message sent out to the aspiring PM. It uses animated visuals of Modi trampling houses to erect industries, followed by him sitting on an airline called ‘Reliable Airlines’ with his eyes gleaming of the Swastik symbol that once was associated with Hitler’s autocratic regime. Also, those following us will know that Vir Das’s comedy rock band Alien Chutney (see here) and Shillong Chamber Choir (see here) came out on separate occasions over the course of last month with singles each highlighting the significance of voting.
