Abhay Deol, whose upcoming movie One By Two is set for a release on January 31, recently attended the Screen Awards 2014 in black – not his suit, not his shoes, but his eye. The blackened eye was a sign of protest against the abuse of the copyright act that bestows musicians with royalty rights. Instead, record label T-Series wanted to deprive the musicians and artistes of their royalty. Deol said, “My music has not yet released because the music company wants me to get the composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to sign a clause which is illegal”.
What Does Abhay Deol’s Black Eye Say?
He seems to have the support of veterans of the music fraternity including Ram Sampath, Sona Mahapatra, Amit Trivedi and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy among others. “I believe in their rights and even if a musician was ready to sign it, I would advise him/her against it. As a result, I have no album in the market. In fact now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the music company pulls out my promos from the TV channels. I don’t have radio play anyway.”
The protest marks a landmark in the fight for the rights of musicians, and artistes at large, who get swallowed by the giants that control the economics of the industry.
