Hans Zimmer ruled Ineligible for Oscars for this work in ‘Dune Part Two’
Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune: Part Two, one of the most anticipated cinematic soundtracks of the year, has been ruled ineligible for Oscar consideration due to Academy rules regarding pre-existing music. Zimmer, a two-time Academy Award winner, initially earned widespread acclaim for his work on Dune (2021), contributing to the epic’s rich and immersive atmosphere. Fans and critics alike were eagerly awaiting his continuation of the score in Dune: Part Two, but the Academy’s strict guidelines have sidelined the film from this year’s race in the Best Original Score category.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stipulates that for a score to qualify as “original,” no more than 20% of its themes can be drawn from pre-existing music used in sequels or franchise films. Since Zimmer’s music in Dune: Part Two incorporates significant elements from his 2021 score, the composition violates this criterion. This marks another high-profile exclusion in recent years, reminiscent of similar disqualifications of outstanding scores like Cliff Martinez’s Drive (2011) and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Arrival (2016).
Despite this, Zimmer’s creative process remains steadfast, focusing more on serving the narrative than collecting accolades. In an interview, Hans Zimmer explained that his score for Dune: Part Two was designed as a continuation of the musical journey he began with the first film. Rather than creating entirely new motifs, he sought to evolve the established themes and guide the story to its conclusion. Zimmer emphasized that his purpose was to support the film’s storytelling rather than crafting an entirely separate musical identity.
The ineligibility ruling does not diminish Hans Zimmer’s work on Dune: Part Two’s impact in other arenas. His score remains eligible for other prestigious awards, including the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Critics Choice Awards. Additionally, Zimmer’s work on Steve McQueen’s upcoming film Blitz could still land him an Oscar nomination this year, providing another avenue for recognition.
While the Dune sequel may have been disqualified from the Oscars, it still stands as a monumental work in the canon of sci-fi soundtracks. Zimmer’s contribution has helped solidify Dune as a multi-dimensional cinematic experience, even without the prospect of another Oscar. The film, featuring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and a star-studded cast, remains a strong contender across other technical categories at the upcoming Academy Awards.
