Will Smith’s Zombie World Just Got a Director, and It Changes Everything
Nearly two decades after Will Smith wandered a deserted Manhattan as the last man on Earth, I Am Legend 2 is no longer a rumour, it’s a real film with a real director, and the story it’s telling may surprise you.
Steven Caple Jr. Confirmed to Direct
Warner Bros. has locked in Steven Caple Jr. to helm the long-awaited sequel to the 2007 blockbuster. The confirmation came during press for his upcoming Netflix miniseries Man on Fire, in which Caple directed the opening two episodes and serves as executive producer.
Steven Caple is no stranger to franchise filmmaking. After his 2016 debut, The Land, he took over the Creed franchise from Ryan Coogler with Creed II (2018), and went on to direct Transformers: Rise of the Beasts for Paramount in 2023. He’s currently one of the busiest directors in Hollywood, juggling multiple Paramount projects alongside his Netflix commitments, with I Am Legend 2 now added to an already formidable slate.
Michael B. Jordan Stars, Will Smith Returns
Michael B. Jordan is set to lead the sequel, continuing his successful collaboration with Caple from Creed II. Will Smith is also reported to be involved, a detail that puzzled many fans who remember his character, virologist Robert Neville, dying in the theatrical version of the original film.
The explanation lies in the ending Warner Bros. is choosing to treat as canon.

The Alternate Ending Changes Everything
When I Am Legend was released in 2007, test audiences rejected the original climax, one that hewed far closer to Richard Matheson’s seminal 1954 novel. In that ending, Robert Neville doesn’t die a hero. Instead, he has a devastating realisation: the infected aren’t mindless monsters. They’ve rebuilt a society, and he is the one terrorising them. He is, in fact, the legend, the boogeyman of a new civilisation.
Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the original screenplay and is returning to pen the sequel, has confirmed this alternate ending will serve as the foundation for I Am Legend 2. It’s a thematically richer launching pad, one that asks harder questions about humanity, otherness, and who really gets to define a monster.
What Comes Next
No release date has been announced, and given Steven Caple’s packed schedule, a production timeline remains unclear. What is clear is that this sequel has meaningful creative architecture behind it: an acclaimed returning writer, a director with proven franchise instincts, and a story anchored in one of science fiction’s most provocative ideas.
For fans who’ve been waiting since the post-credits whisper of possibility in 2007, I Am Legend 2 is finally, unmistakably, on its way.
