NBC Pulls the Plug on ‘Suits LA’ After Just One Season: What Went Wrong?

NBC’s ambitious attempt to expand the Suits universe has come to an abrupt end. The network officially announced the cancellation of “Suits LA” after just one season. Premiering in February, the legal drama spinoff was poised to ride the wave of Suits’ unprecedented success on Netflix — but instead, it struggled to find its footing, falling short in both viewership and critical reception.

Despite a built-in fan base and a solid cast led by Stephen Amell, alongside Lex Scott DavisJosh McDermitt, and Bryan GreenbergSuits LA was unable to generate the momentum NBC had hoped for. Viewers who tuned in expecting the same sharp wit and compelling courtroom intrigue of the original were met with a show that, according to many critics, lacked the same spark.

Set in Los Angeles, the spinoff followed Ted Black (Amell), a former New York federal prosecutor who reinvents himself in LA’s high-stakes legal scene. With his law firm on the brink of collapse, Ted must embrace a side of law he once despised — all while grappling with personal demons from his past. The premise promised drama and reinvention, but ultimately failed to resonate with audiences.

Although original Suits cast members like Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, and David Costabile made guest appearances, even their nostalgia-fueled cameos couldn’t save the series.

NBC’s decision to cancel Suits LA isn’t isolated. It joins several other recent cancellations, including The Irrational, Lopez vs. Lopez, and Night Court, as the network retools its primetime lineup heading into the 2025-2026 season. However, Suits LA’s demise is particularly notable given the original show’s resurgence in pop culture.

In 2023, Suits broke streaming records on Netflix, dominating viewership charts for weeks and sparking rumours of reboots and revivals. That momentum led to Suits LA being greenlit, but it appears the magic didn’t carry over.

Industry insiders suggest that while Suits thrived as a streaming binge, the new spinoff struggled in the traditional weekly primetime format. Others cite the show’s lacklustre writing and a failure to capture the original’s chemistry and tension.

Critics were also harsh, calling the series “a pale imitation” and “more procedural than punchy,” a far cry from the slick, high-drama world fans loved.

Even the involvement of Suits creator Aaron Korsh, who served as an executive producer alongside Doug Liman, David Bartis, and others, wasn’t enough to steer the ship.

For now, fans hoping for more legal drama in the Suits universe will have to hold tight. With Suits LA officially shelved, the fate of future spin-offs or a full-scale reboot remains uncertain.

Still, as Suits continues to attract new life on streaming platforms, NBC may not be done with the franchise just yet — but they’ll need a stronger case if they want fans back in the courtroom.
