Weekend Collection: Volume 14

We’re back with another edition of the Weekend Collection, a bunch of songs that made us sit up and take notice when they were played. A set-list of assorted tunes to kick-start your day, so just lean back and enjoy.

Hoirong – “Fancy Dress + Hindi = Awesome”

Hoirong, solo project of Kamal, frontman of Lounge Piranha, is a very niche sound. Deliberately raw, frank and in-your-face, the honesty of the music and contextual relevance of the lyrics reminisce a somewhat ‘beat generation’ level of musician in the national indie scene. Off his debut album, “fancy dress + Hindi = awesome” is raw and loud.

Madboy Mink – “Alley Cats”

The Mumbai-based funk-disco duo, well known for their distinctly unique mash up of dirty electro and funk with old school Harlem swing really go all-out with their new EP. Madboy Mink‘s album opener, this song mixes ragtime jazz vocal tones with some groovy electronic beats.

Nanok – “Aerosol Can”

A bold remix by Nanok of Aerosol Can and Pharell Williams’ Major Lazer. This Mumbai based electronic artist is quickly moving up in national recognition with quirky, yet intense party tracks that have the local audiences screaming for more.

Løt.te – Private Trangressions

Private Transgressions come from Løt.te: an alias of the Turkish-born visual artist and producer Mehmet Irdel, who also co-runs the mixed-media creative outpost Rote Productions in Brooklyn. Although his work experiments with power electronics and noise soundscapes, Løt.te’s debut on The Bunker New York finds the producer meddling with detail-oriented techno beats and sub-heavy grooves.

Chet Faker – “Lesson in Patience”

Australian Nick James Murphy, aka Chet Faker, became an overnight sensation with his cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity”, which even got him featured during half-time at the SuperBowl. With some soulful vocals to start off the track, it sways into some smooth jazzy grooves.

Deadstar – “Sea Dream”

Despite the resuscitation of his old post-rock band, Stuck in November, Nihal Anand’s solo project Deadstar seems to be going strong with an emotive blend of mellow, dreamy sounds and intense rhythm lines. Off his last EP, Congratulations on your Happiness, this song just lets you drift.
