Man Jailed for Murder Breaks Down Over Missing GTA 6, Shocking Bodycam Footage Reveals

A deeply unsettling criminal case from the UK has gone viral after newly released bodycam footage revealed a convicted murderer expressing more concern about missing the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 ( GTA 6) than the crime he had just confessed to. The footage has sparked public anger and renewed debate over accountability, empathy, and the cultural fixation on major video game releases.

Robert Richens, a 35-year-old man from Oxford, was sentenced to life imprisonment after admitting to killing his former partner, 40-year-old Rachael Vaughan. Yet moments after calling emergency services to confess, Richens could be heard crying about the possibility of missing GTA 6 while in prison.

“I Think I Accidentally Killed Someone”

According to court records, Robert Richens phoned emergency services on May 30 last year, telling operators, “You’re not going to believe this. I think I accidentally killed someone.” He repeatedly claimed he had not intended to cause harm, despite later pleading guilty to murder.

As police arrived and placed him under arrest, bodycam footage captured Robert Richens appearing distressed—not primarily over the death of his ex-partner, but over the consequences he would face personally. In one moment that has since circulated widely online, Richens told officers he was “gonna miss GTA 6 and that,” later clarifying he meant Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated video games of the decade.

At the time, GTA 6 was scheduled for release in May 2026.

“I’m Going to Get Life”

An arresting officer attempted to reassure Richens that he had “ages” before the game’s release, but the comment did little to calm him. “I’m going to get life,” Richard Richens responded, sobbing. He went on to say he could have fled instead of calling the police—another remark that shocked viewers when the footage was made public.

In December, Richens formally pleaded guilty to murder at Oxford Crown Court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years and one month, ensuring he will almost certainly miss the launch of GTA 6 and many years beyond.

Police Condemn “Heartless” Actions

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart May issued a strong statement following the sentencing, focusing attention back where many feel it belongs—on the victim.

“Rachael Vaughan was taken from the very place she should have felt safest—her own home,” May said, describing Richens’ actions as “heartless” and emphasizing the devastating impact on Vaughan’s family. He added that the sentence ensures Richens will now face the full consequences of his actions.

Internet Reaction and Cultural Backlash

The bizarre contrast between a violent crime and concern over a video game has fueled intense reactions online. Many commentators criticized the comments as emblematic of a lack of remorse, while others pointed to the moment as a grim reflection of how pop culture obsession can collide with real-world tragedy.

Ultimately, the case stands as a stark reminder that while entertainment can dominate headlines and conversations, it pales in comparison to the irreversible harm caused by violent crime.
