Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park Closes Following Tragic Accident and Lawsuit

Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park, a popular venue for off-road enthusiasts in Riverside County, California, has announced it will permanently close its doors following a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl, Brooke Carlton, in June. The incident has led to a lawsuit and increased scrutiny around safety protocols at the park, which contributed to the decision to cease operations.

The accident involved two young riders on a track designated for off-road vehicles. Brooke was riding an electric motorbike when another child struck her on a motorbike. Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reported that while the other child sustained only minor injuries, Brooke was critically injured and later died in the hospital. The event, described by officials as a “freak accident,” has raised concerns about the safety measures and supervision in place at the park.

In response to the lawsuit filed by Brooke’s family, which alleges negligence on the part of the park, the property owner decided to terminate the park’s operating agreement. In a statement on social media, the park’s management expressed sadness over the decision but acknowledged that it would be in the property owner’s “best interest to have the track closed.” The message, which thanked the community and patrons for their support, also reflected on the challenges and rewards of operating the track.

The news of the park’s closure has sent waves through the local motorsport community, as Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park was one of the few facilities in the region offering a range of off-road tracks for dirt bikes, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles. Known for attracting riders of all ages and skill levels, the park has been a hub for local competitions, family outings, and community gatherings.

However, safety concerns have lingered over the years. Off-road sports, while exhilarating, carry inherent risks, especially for young riders. For some, the park’s closure has highlighted a broader conversation on youth motorsports safety, with calls for stricter age limits, equipment guidelines, and enhanced supervision at such facilities.

The incident underscores the balance that motorsport venues must maintain between providing thrilling experiences and ensuring participant safety, especially when minors are involved. With advancements in safety gear and stricter training protocols, many advocates believe that off-road parks can minimize the risks, but achieving zero risk remains challenging in high-speed, high-impact sports.

In memory of Brooke Carlton, a final gathering was held at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park, where riders came together for a last lap in tribute to the young enthusiast. The park’s closure has left a gap in the community and serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of safety in recreational sports.

As the legal proceedings continue, Brooke’s family and supporters are hopeful that greater awareness and precautionary measures will emerge, ensuring that such tragic accidents are less likely to happen in the future.
