What do actor Sunny Leone and nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar have in common?
Literature.
Impossible though it may sound it has been made possible by Juggernaut Books, the brand new publishing house that is all set to change the publishing game in India.
Publishing in India is not known for its startups, and that is only one of the reasons why Juggernaut Books is making the news. A mobile-first publishing house Juggernaut Books plans to target the large readership that prefers digital reading over lugging around heavy books.
Headed by Chiki Sarkar, former publisher of Penguin India and founding editor of Random House India, and Durga Raghunath, former CEO of Firstpost and VP of Zomato, Juggernaut Books has a unique app-based model in place. Take Sunny Leone for example. Juggernaut roped in Leone as a writer of short; three-minute read erotic stories at Rs. 7 a tale. For seven nights in a row, a reader can log in to the app and enjoy a racy tale penned by none other than the former adult film actress at a very reasonable price.
Meanwhile, Juggernaut can boast of heavy literature weights such as Arundhati Roy and India’s new favourite columnist Twinkle Khanna in its list of authors as well. It also plans on being a platform for new talent and has already roped in young, upcoming authors such as Sayantan Ghosh and Mimi Mondal for their book debuts. Juggernaut hopes to cover a variety of genres thus pulling in a diverse reading audience.
Going solely digital in the publishing scenario is a bold move, to say the least. While a few publishing houses do release e-books Juggernaut Books, headed by two women with solid experience in the industry, aims to change the tide in digital publishing with a firm finger on the pulse of the current reading public.
