Spotify Down: Global Outage Leaves Millions Without Music, Podcasts, or Playlists

If your morning playlist suddenly stopped or your podcast won’t load and is down, you’re not alone. Spotify is experiencing a major global outage, frustrating millions of users who are currently unable to stream music, browse content, or even access artist profiles.

According to Downdetector, the first signs of trouble began around 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET on Tuesday morning, with a sharp spike in user complaints coming in within the hour. The outage appears to affect core features, including Spotify Connect, playlists, search, radio stations, and audiobooks — essentially leaving the streaming platform non-functional for many.

As of now, Spotify has not issued an official statement acknowledging the disruption or providing an estimated time for resolution. Meanwhile, users across the globe have taken to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Threads to vent, meme, and search for answers using trending tags like #SpotifyDown and #SpotifyOutage.

Users Around the World Left in Silence

From the U.S. to Europe and parts of Asia, Spotify subscribers report being logged out unexpectedly or stuck with infinite loading screens when trying to access their favourite content. While some report partial service, such as the ability to open the app but not play anything, most users are facing complete streaming blackouts.

Spotify Connect, the service that allows users to play music across multiple devices, appears to be completely non-functional, compounding frustration for those using smart speakers or in-car systems.

Apple Music Sees Surge in Activity

With Spotify offline, rival platforms like Apple Music and YouTube Music are seeing a surge in traffic. Apple Music, in particular, remains fully operational, prompting some users to consider making the switch permanently.

“I haven’t heard silence in my apartment in over two years… Spotify going down feels like the WiFi went out,” joked one user on X. Others used the opportunity to remind their followers that

“Apple Music never goes down like this.”

No Official Comment — Yet

Despite the scale of the outage, Spotify has yet to provide details on what caused the issue or when regular service might resume. Outages like this can stem from a variety of causes, ranging from server overloads to DNS configuration errors or even cybersecurity incidents, although there is no evidence pointing to a specific cause at this time.

Tech industry analysts note that Spotify outages, although relatively rare, have become more noticeable as the platform increasingly integrates with home devices, vehicles, and wearable devices. For a company with over 600 million global users, even a few hours of downtime can result in massive user disruption.

What to Do If Spotify Is Down for You

  • Check the Spotify Status account on X for updates.

  • Try logging out and back in — but avoid uninstalling the app unless instructed to do so.

  • Switch to offline playlists if you’ve previously downloaded content.

  • Explore other music platforms temporarily if needed.

Until Spotify restores full service, users may need to rediscover silence — or consider switching to Apple Music. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
