La La Land mistakenly announced Oscars 2017 Best Picture but Moonlight actual winner

In a very Steve Harvey moment – on the biggest night for the movies and the biggest award of the night – the Oscars 2017 Best Picture was announced as La La Land – at first – by Faye Dunaway, who was presenting it alongside Warren Beatty. However, just as the celebrations and speeches began on-stage, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz walked to the microphone to say “Guys, I’m sorry, there’s a mistake,” then pointing to the Moonlight team he added, “Moonlight, you guys won best picture.”

Moments later, Beatty tried to explain that when he opened the envelope and read the card, it said ‘Ema Stone, La La Land’ which confused him – adding “I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

When the Moonlight team ascended stage, director Barry Jenkins said “Very clearly, even in my dreams this could not be true,” Jenkins said. “But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it, cause this is true.”

Moonlight, the story of a gay black man in a rough neighborhood in Miami, earlier had won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and – beating Indian actor Dev Patel – it also took the Best Supporting Actor award.

In wasn’t that bad a night for La La Land however, the film’s director, Damien Chazelle became the youngest to ever win the Best Director award. Emma Stone, star of the movie won Best Actress in a Leading Role and in total, the movie took home 7 awards – of the 14 it was nominated for.
