Rajkumar Hirani to Return With ‘3 Idiots’ Sequel, Filming Begins 2026: Report
More than 15 years after redefining Indian cinema with its sharp wit, emotional resonance and social commentary, Rajkumar Hirani’s iconic film 3 Idiots is officially getting a sequel, according to media reports. The beloved cast—including Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi—is expected to reunite on screen as Hirani gears up to revisit one of Bollywood’s biggest cultural milestones.
A Sequel Fans Have Waited 15 Years For
As per reports, the sequel’s script has been finalised, and insiders suggest the team believes they have recaptured the “magic” of the original. A source close to the production revealed that the film is as funny, emotional and meaningful as the 2009 blockbuster that continues to resonate with audiences even today.
The story will reportedly pick up nearly 15 years after the events of the original, following the beloved characters—Rancho, Farhan and Raju—as their paths cross again for an entirely new adventure. Fans have long speculated about a follow-up, and this development finally confirms the franchise’s return.
Why Rajkumar Hirani Chose to Prioritise 3 Idiots 2
Interestingly, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani were previously set to collaborate on a biopic of cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke. However, the project has now been put on hold.
According to industry insiders, Hirani wanted to dedicate time exclusively to expanding his idea for 3 Idiots 2 into a full-fledged screenplay.
“Hirani always had a seed of an idea for the sequel,” the source shared, “but he wanted it to be perfect—something worthy of the legacy of 3 Idiots.”
With the script now locked, the film is expected to go on floors in the second half of 2026.
A Legacy That Changed Bollywood Forever
Released on 25 December 2009, 3 Idiots was adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone and produced under Vinod Chopra Films. The film chronicled the lives of three engineering students navigating academic pressure, life choices, and friendship—subjects that resonated deeply with Indian youth.
The film set multiple benchmarks:
-
First Indian movie to cross the ₹200-crore mark
-
Winner of three National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film
-
A global phenomenon, loved for its humour, heart and social message
The cast also included Boman Irani, Mona Singh and Achyut Potdar, all of whom contributed to the film’s enduring charm.
As the industry buzz intensifies, excitement is building among fans eager to see where their favourite characters have landed after 15 years. With Hirani at the helm and the original cast expected to return, 3 Idiots 2 is poised to become one of the most anticipated Bollywood sequels of the decade.
