Nikhil Kaul, aka Frame/Frame tells us why he chose to release a remixed version of his EP Swimmers barely 6 months after the release of the original EP. And, the collaborations with Sandunes, Sickflip, Sulk Station among others for Swimmers Re: Mixed.

When asked to pin his music down to a category, Nikhil Kaul, the mind behind the bass-heavy electronica project Frame/Frame, is part clueless and part indifferent as he feels his music need not be restricted by definition. Nikhil says, “I grew up in a generation with cassettes and CDs and you didn’t really think about what this (genre) is. I was listening to everything and I think my music is a by-product of everything. (Largely) it’s intricate electronica. I just like sick beats.” Today on April 7, Frame/Frame released a remixed version of his original EP Swimmers titled as Swimmers Re: Mixed featuring indie electronica producers like Sulk Station, SICKFLIP, Paralights, Curtain Blue, Sandunes and Audio Pervert.

Barely six months since the release of his EP Swimmers, Nikhil decided to come out with its remixed version. “I believe my album takes a while to grow on you. It’s been on my mind to do something like remixing. I’m really happy with the way it all turned out.” Frame/Frame has been a regular kid on the block playing at festivals, gigs and events to packed houses since June 2012 when he started fusing electronica samples to acoustic rhythms.

For one who draws his influences from Trentemøller, Trifonic and Ratatat, he feels the audience for niche electronica is way lesser in size in comparison to commercial electro dance songs for obvious reasons. “Well, it’s not as big a message to consumers as an Avicii. But that kind of change has taken place the world over and not in India alone. It’s not a fair comparison to make. EDM is like pop music. Next to Bollywood, EDM probably has the highest sales in India.”

Bob Geldof had spoken at the Sounds of Freedom concert nearly two weeks ago on March 23 on the relevance of the internet – that one will soon be able to do a concert from one’s bedroom or any room for that matter and relay it live on YouTube and there will be no authority to stop the person. Nikhil believes in similar techniques to get his music out to the crowds. According to Nikhil, “The internet is a beautiful place because you make choices when compared to TV where you are thrust upon with this one thing. EDM is almost like a product of TV, I would say.” For Swimmers, his only effort was to upload it online. “The EP just went online. That’s all I did with it and didn’t worry about it. I really think its audience is going to grow immensely.”

Nikhil, who was previously part of two bands – Constellation Project (till 2011) and Switch Bitch (monsoon of 2011), drew in influences from trip-hop by the dollop. So much so, that the sounds of Frame/Frame’s original EP Swimmers retains a significant portion of the jagged trip-hop delineated by smooth bass lines. All that we’re sure of is Frame/Frame is raring to go about Swimmers Re: Mixed.

Listen to Swimmers: Re: Mixed below. As part of the EP launch tour, Frame/Frame will perform at Delhi’s Turquoise Cottage on April 11, Bangalore’s The Humming Tree on April 12 and Pune’s High Spirits on April 13.
