Alternative Electronica Duo Klypp Release Debut EP

In January 2014, when Bangalore-based psychedelic-alternative band The Bicycle Days decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, frontman-vocalist Karthik Basker thought it was an apt time to begin working on his personal electronica project Klypp with Faheemul Hasan, whom he had met a workshop. Nearly three months hence today on April 3, they came out with their four-track debut EP titled Manifest.

Characterized by sweet melodies trapped in layers of electronica glitch trends and chill vibes, the sounds of Manifest, in the duo’s own words belong to the ‘alternative electronica’ genre. Defining the sounds, Karthik says, “It’s got alternative music roots in it because both Faheem and I come from alternative backgrounds and we have our own band influences as well. This electronica (music) has a lot of chill out elements and makes for easy listening.”

Klypp’s music, however, bears no resemblance to Karthik’s previous band The Bicycle Days. Apart from the EP, the duo is working on 15 other tracks in the same vein of alt-electro tunes. Speaking about the creative process of designing these tracks, he says, “It’s our first EP, so we already had pre-written material. Two of the songs I had written and two were written by Faheem. Then we selected all the songs we liked from all that we had, I put the lyrics and vocal melodies on it; Faheem added a few layers or played some guitar or piano. Again, it was a very organic process. Sometimes the lyrics came first and sometimes the idea was already there. We let the songs take its course.”

But in an Indian demographic engulfed by an EDM clout, chill-out electronica artists like Klypp, feel their audience is constantly growing in numbers. “Apart from being electronica, these are also songs with lyrics. EDM is supposed to keep you in a certain place and this (alternative electronica) is designed for a completely different purpose. And this has a wider variety of consumption if people start getting into it. It’s more accessible.”
