Sameer Wankhede Set to Enter Politics, Likely to Join Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena Ahead of Maharashtra Elections
Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Sameer Wankhede, known for his prominent role in the Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan drug case, is reportedly preparing to enter politics. Sources have revealed that Wankhede is expected to join the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and may contest in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. Speculations suggest that he could be running for office from the Dharavi constituency, one of Mumbai’s most high-profile and politically significant areas.
Sameer Wankhede gained widespread attention in 2021 when he led the NCB’s investigation into the drugs-on-cruise case that resulted in the arrest of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan. Although Aryan Khan was later cleared of all charges, Sameer Wankhede’s involvement in the case brought him national visibility. However, the officer found himself embroiled in controversy in 2023 when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused him of seeking a Rs 25 crore bribe to exonerate Aryan Khan. This led to charges of criminal conspiracy and extortion being filed against Wankhede, further complicating his career trajectory.
Despite his legal challenges, Sameer Wankhede’s entry into the political sphere could mark a significant turning point. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), which has been actively trying to strengthen its base before the 2024 elections, appears to see Wankhede as a valuable addition to the party. Sources claim that Wankhede has met with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on at least two occasions, with discussions reportedly centred on his potential role in the party and the upcoming elections.
Wankhede’s candidacy in Dharavi, a crucial constituency, could stir up the political landscape in Maharashtra. As a highly visible figure, his association with the Aryan Khan case may attract a mix of support and opposition. However, Sameer Wankhede’s move to join the Shiv Sena has yet to be confirmed by the party itself, and official announcements are expected in the coming days.
With the Maharashtra Assembly elections just months away, Wankhede’s potential entry into politics adds a layer of intrigue to the already dynamic political scene in the state. His involvement in a high-stakes political battle could shift the narrative in key constituencies and reshape alliances within Maharashtra’s volatile political landscape. All eyes are now on whether Wankhede will formally step into the political arena and how his candidacy will unfold in the election run-up.
