Trump’s Comments on Rob Reiner’s Death Trigger Bipartisan Backlash
The deaths of acclaimed US filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner have been overshadowed by a wave of political outrage after US President Donald Trump appeared to politicise the tragedy, prompting condemnation from across the political spectrum.
Reiner, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday in what police are investigating as a double homicide. Their son, Nick Reiner, has since been arrested on homicide charges. The shocking nature of the crime initially drew widespread sympathy—until Trump weighed in.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Donald Trump suggested the couple’s deaths were linked to Rob Reiner’s opposition to his presidency, describing the filmmaker as “tortured and struggling” and claiming the deaths were “reportedly due to the anger he caused” by opposing Trump.
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession with President Donald J. Trump,” Trump wrote, offering no evidence to support the claim.
The remarks were widely seen as blaming the victims and exploiting a family tragedy for political point-scoring—fueling swift backlash from Democrats, Republicans, media figures, and cultural leaders.

Several Republican lawmakers publicly criticised the president. Congressman Mike Lawler of New York called the statement “wrong,” stressing that violence should never be politicised. Representative Thomas Massie described Trump’s comments as “inappropriate and disrespectful,” while Marjorie Taylor Greene said plainly, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics.”
Congressman Don Bacon went further, telling CNN the remarks sounded like something “from a drunk guy at a bar, not the president of the United States.”
Democratic leaders were equally scathing. Senator Chris Murphy said Trump had “lost it,” while Senator Dick Durbin labelled the post “one of the cruelest things I’ve ever heard a president say.” Former Vice President Kamala Harris paid tribute to Rob Reiner’s cultural legacy, praising his dedication to democracy and storytelling.
Former President Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe and Jill Biden, and Nancy Pelosi all issued statements honouring Reiner’s contributions to film, activism, and American culture, pointedly contrasting Trump’s tone with messages of empathy.
Rob Reiner was best known for directing classics such as The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and When Harry Met Sally, while also being a vocal supporter of Democratic causes and a longtime critic of Trump, whom he once described as “mentally unfit” to lead.
Critics argue that Trump’s remarks reflect a broader pattern of grievance-driven politics, even in moments of national mourning. As David Axelrod, former strategist to President Barack Obama, put it: “For Trump, his grievances trump their grief.”
As investigations into the Reiners’ deaths continue, many leaders have called for decency, restraint, and compassion—values they say were glaringly absent from the president’s response.
