ACT Fibernet Launches Public Wi-Fi Hotspots in Chennai: Bridging the Digital Divide

In a move set to transform Chennai into a connected city, ACT Fibernet (Atria Convergence Technologies Ltd.), India’s largest fiber-focused wired broadband internet service provider, has unveiled an ambitious plan to deploy public Wi-Fi hotspots across the city. The initiative, launched on the 23rd of February, 2024, aims to provide seamless and high-speed internet access to all residents, regardless of whether they are ACT Fibernet customers or not.

The official launch ceremony took place at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, and was graced by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, along with other senior dignitaries representing the government of Tamil Nadu.

The deployment of these public Wi-Fi hotspots is being carried out in a phased manner, with over 500 hotspots launched in the initial phase. These hotspots are strategically located at key locations throughout the city, including popular spots like Marina Beach and Besant Nagar Beach, as well as bus stops, corporation parks, and bus terminuses. The network is set to expand to 3000 hotspots in total, ensuring extensive coverage and accessibility across Chennai.

One of the key highlights of this initiative is that both ACT Fibernet customers and non-customers can benefit from the free Wi-Fi access. Non-ACT customers will enjoy 45 minutes of free Wi-Fi at speeds of up to 20 Mbps, while ACT customers will receive the same duration of free Wi-Fi at their subscribed speeds. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial status, can experience the benefits of high-speed internet connectivity.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. M.K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, expressed his delight in partnering with ACT Fibernet and highlighted how this project aligns with the government’s vision of creating a digitally empowered Tamil Nadu. He emphasized the importance of providing equal access to information and opportunities for all citizens.

Mr. Bala Malladi, Chief Executive Officer of ACT Fibernet, echoed these sentiments, stating, “ACT Fibernet, being the most admired and beloved broadband service provider of Tamil Nadu, we are delighted to bring this free WiFi public hotspot service connecting people and communities across seamlessly. This public Wi-Fi project is a testament to our commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering the citizens of Tamil Nadu with the Internet’s transformative power.”

The establishment of Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces across Chennai is expected to catalyze the development of the city’s IT infrastructure and address connectivity challenges. By providing free and easy access to the internet in bustling areas, ACT Fibernet is democratizing access to information and fostering a tech-savvy environment. The company’s commitment to building and maintaining a robust and accessible digital infrastructure for Chennai is poised to create a more connected and empowered future for all residents.
