The AI Impact: Balancing Threats and Opportunities in Politics
As the world gears up for elections in over 50 countries, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping political landscapes is a topic of intense discussion. The recent launch of the book “Age of Agency,” authored by South Indian-origin, South African and former Microsoft executive Kerushan Govender, has sparked further debate on the implications of AI in politics.
The Launch of “Age of Agency”
The unveiling of “Age of Agency” took place at a ceremony held at Hotel Deccan Serai Grande in Telecom Nagar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Kerushan Govender, whose ancestors hailed from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, migrated to South Africa in 1869. The book was launched by Mr. Bharani Kumar Aroll, President & CEO at TechTriad Inc., along with Prof. Atul Negi, Dean of the School of Computer & Information Sciences at the University of Hyderabad, and Shri R. P. Thakur I.P.S., Former DGP of Andhra Pradesh.
AI Threats in Indian Elections
One of the key concerns raised at the launch was the potential threat posed by AI-generated deep fakes, fake videos, voices, and manipulated media in the upcoming Indian General Elections. Prof. Atul Negi suggested that while computer-literate individuals may be able to discern deep fakes, the general public could be more susceptible to manipulation. However, Kerushan Govender emphasized that the threat might not be as significant as imagined, as there are technologies available to detect deep fakes.
Regulating AI in Politics
Govender highlighted the need for regulations to address the risks associated with AI in politics. He emphasized that while legislation is essential, many governments have yet to take concrete steps in this direction. He emphasized the challenges in determining what to regulate, how to regulate it, and who should be responsible for regulation. Govender stressed the importance of addressing these issues promptly to mitigate the risks posed by AI in elections.
AI’s Economic Impact
On a more positive note, Bharani Kumar Aroll highlighted the economic potential of AI, stating that it could add $1.2-1.5 trillion to India’s GDP over the next few years. He also addressed concerns about AI’s impact on employment, noting that while some jobs may be replaced, AI will also create new opportunities and drive economic growth.
The Human Element in AI
Prof. Atul Negi provided insights into why the title “Age of Agency” is fitting for the current era, emphasizing the importance of human agency in leveraging AI’s capabilities. He noted that while AI offers immense potential, humanity’s values and needs must remain at the forefront of technological advancements.
