5 Khaleesis of the Indie Music Kingdom

The word Khaleesi literally translates to “Queen”. Since it is the 21st century, we’d like to fuse age-old definitions with modern day libido-driving adjectives – poise, intelligence, beauty, sex appeal, tresses, fashion sense, musical deftness, and, did we mention sex appeal? Check out 5 female indie musicians who we think are, in plain and simple terms: I-R-R-E-S-T-I-B-L-E.

Monica Dogra

Anyone wants to contend why she’s on top? Top of the list, filthy minds! Suave yet sultry, Monica Dogra could rule a kingdom without dragons and without an army. She’d have the snake-charmer effect on crowds while giving sermons. Moving to more realistic situations, Dogra is known for her contributions to the alternative electronica collective Shaa’ir and Func, which she performs with Randolph Correia.

Belonging to the category of poised and well behaved is ex-member of indie-pop band Aasma, of “Chandu Ke Chacha” fame, Vasuda Sharma. Sharma, who recently released her new album Attuned Spirits, uses fusion sounds that go hand-in-glove with her celestial voice. Always wearing a positive smile, she believes indie music has a new face that’s changing so systematically that recognition and money as an indie artist won’t be a problem, soon. Well, we’d like to show her to our mom.

Sanaya Ardeshir

A typical Parsi-looking girl with porcelain-white complexion and fluffy hair, Sanaya Ardeshir, who plays under the name of Sandunes, is ever-ebullient about her music. Producing, composing and playing the synth, she does it all remembering to look pretty. Always! Playing the keyboard at first, she moved on to creating electronica sounds using the synth, and has never been happier. Her music oscillates between future garage and post dubstep outfits.

Anushka Manchanda

We might get into trouble describing Anushka Manchanda and her goddess-like appearance. Having done stints as a model, a VJ and singing with pop band Viva, Manchanda is distracted by ‘Shiny objects’, ‘Boys on Bikes’  and ‘Chinese Food’, as says her twitter page. So if you’re either one of those, you should serenade outside her house. Known for her powerhouse performances and vocal skills, she is a lethal combination of killer looks and talent overdose.

The blues band Soulmate has two prominent members – Rudy Wallang and Tipriti Kharbangar. Wallang is not a woman. He’s played bass for one of the oldest bands in the country – The Great Society, with Lou Majaw. So let’s not letch at him! While Kharbangar, is worth mentioning. Not in a lewd and opportunistic way, but in a rather respectful fashion. She plays the rhythm guitar and sings. A multi-layered voice and unblemished fair skin coupled with poker straight hair (usually), makes her charm absolutely inaccessible.
