Places to Freak Out for Eid
With all the discerning public (we mean all you food lovers out there) who wait for a chance to go tease your palates in Delhi, here’s a winsome list of options that ensure your Eid food is but a true finale to the drumroll of festivities.
Al Jawahar
Now, this tiny self-sufficient place has not been subject to as much fanfare as the lording-it-over-Mughlai cuisineKarim’s, but if you want to moon over your nihari, all succulent and soaked in fragrance, as the morning sun streams in (yes, this is for breakfast, Eid Mubarak!) then this is the place to be. You can make a walk out of it, passing narrow galis lined with glowing amber ovens popping out plump tandoori rotis and sheermal.
Opposite Gate No 1, Jama Masjid, New Delhi, Ph: 23261341, Rs 600-800 for two
Dum Pukht
The name says it all. Feel like a Shah of yore as you step into the courtly atmosphere with furniture influenced from regal eras. A contemporary take on Mughal cuisine (and portions) does not take away from the small points of attention that win us over. An exhaustive range of fragrant dumbiryanis and kebab platters aside, we quite enjoy the healthy naan options that made us feel less guilty about the huge amount of food we inevitably order.
ITC Maurya , Diplomatic Enclave, Sardar Patel Marg, Ph: 26112233, Rs. 2500++ for two
MotiMahal
The perfect place for a geriatric-to-toddler family get-togetherand everyone in between, MotiMahal has an old-world charm with an outdoorsy seating area, where awnings let soft light in between creepers. To come down to things which matter, we swear by their kakori kebabs, seekhsand salan. And while you might not consider butter chicken typical Eid fare, who doesn’t like their falling-of-the-bones tender preparation, dare we say best in the city? And they aren’t done yet, for icy cold plates of kesarkulfi-faluda will lead you into a delightful state.

Zerzura
Here’s to Eid celebrations with a difference. Named after a mythical jannat-esque golden city which was never found despite several expeditions to locate it, here’s your Holy Grail quest in search of authentic Middle Eastern cuisine maybe with some Shish Taouk, freshly made Shawarma wraps out of a wooden oven, Sheefaand Briouats, among others. Built around modern aesthetics, the well planned and varied interiors add to making this trip a memorable one. A healthy Eid can also be on the cards, with option like a Fattoush salad, or a char grilled Prawns with Sumac pizza. The rather verbose menu will keep you amused with legends associated with each dish.
Clarion Collection, ShaheedJeet Singh Marg, Qutab Institutional Area, Rs. 2500 for two
Raas
This place has a sufiana ethos, and a menu that boasts of dishes of the legendary North West Frontier, famous for its cuisine, with dishes from both India and Pakistan. Facing the HauzKhas ruins, enjoy a meal that starts with a LahsuniPayakaShorba or a Shikampuri kebab platter to a SharabiRaan or a Karachi KadhaiPaneer. Polish it off with a winsome helping of beetroot halwa, Eid kiSewian and AkbariZardaPulao. (Go ahead and have all three if you want, desserts are sugar free, wink wink.)
