Weekend Collection: Volume 11

Over the past few months, we have been providing to you six tracks each week that got us sitting up and taking notice. That moment when you stop in your tracks and say ‘what’s that song?’ is often forgotten, and usually, so is the song. But in our eleventh Weekend Collection, we bring to you a bunch of those self-same tunes that grabbed us by our aural senses.

FuntCase – Gorilla Flex

This hippie dubstep act has been making some serious waves in the realm of alternative electronica. Based out of England, James Hazell aka FuntCase, has been releasing almost two albums every year, with Gorilla Flex coming out of his 2009 release under 4:20 Records. With an eerie intro and some serious drum and bass later on, this track will most definitely wake you up.

Lovage – Strangers on A Train (Instrumental)

Lovage is a studio supergroup featuring Dan the Automator producing, Mike Patton and JenniferCharles on vocals, Kid Koala on the turntables, Brandon Arnovick (as Astacio the Nudist) on guitar, Daniels Spills on keyboards and SweetP on harpsichord and noseflute. Hitchcock references abound, the instrumental version of “Strangers on a Train” will make you reminisce on the old school triphop of the 1990s.

ProleteR – “April Showers”

ProleteR is a French producer, making music for years, first performing in bands as a guitar player, he gradually fell into production and hip-hop. Focusing on the mix of old tunes and new, “April Showers” emphasises this theme of ‘listening to vinyl records while playing the Maschine’. A groovy beat laced over some early jazz makes for a great mix.

Sam Abraham – “Deep Sunshine”

On the forefront of the upcoming electronica scene, this Bangalore-based DJ has also produced several other tracks. With a versatility that is necessary in the electronica world, he has created a niche following of dance music fans. His forms of house and hard techno mix provide some heavy, but spacious beats as the genres start to blur.

Old Man Earth – “Avighna”

Former guitarist of psychedelic rock band Drones From The Turbine, JaydevUmesh, under his new electronic moniker Old Man Earth, saw his first gig at a downtown bookstore in Bangalore recently. Alternative, psybient and rhythmic, his tones are neither too overwhelming, nor too subtle, making for a nice mix, especially with the many Indian motif samples thrown in.

Rounak Maiti – “I Can’t Tell You What To Do”

This acoustic singer-songwriter has come a long way over the last few years, at least in terms of professionalism. All his folk-guitar tracks now have a polished vibe, with the emotions of his voice really coming out into the forefront. This latest SoundCloud upload is a brooding, melancholic piece that will leave you dazed.
