Tulsi Gabbard Accused of Blocking Whistleblower Complaint From Congress

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is facing renewed scrutiny after a whistleblower complaint accused her of improperly delaying the transmission of a disclosure to Congress. The allegations, made by an intelligence official through legal counsel, have intensified debate over whistleblower protections and congressional oversight of the U.S. intelligence community.

The whistleblower complaint against Tulsi Gabbard was reportedly filed with the intelligence community’s inspector general in May and, according to the whistleblower’s attorney, was formally requested to be shared with lawmakers the following month. However, members of congressional intelligence committees were not informed until several months later, sparking concerns among former intelligence officials and lawmakers.

Lawyer Claims Complaint Was Improperly Withheld

Andrew Bakaj, the attorney representing the intelligence official, accused Tulsi Gabbard of attempting to block or delay Congress from reviewing the complaint. In a public statement, Bakaj alleged that the delay undermined the inspector general’s independence and prevented lawmakers from fulfilling their oversight responsibilities.

Bakaj argued that intelligence agencies typically resolve security-related concerns surrounding whistleblower disclosures within weeks, not months. He warned that extended delays could jeopardize Congress’s ability to monitor sensitive intelligence activities, including covert operations.

The substance of the whistleblower complaint has not been publicly disclosed, and Bakaj has stated that he has not personally reviewed the full contents of the filing.

Gabbard’s Office Denies Any Wrongdoing

Tulsi Gabbard’s office has firmly rejected the allegations. In a social media statement, her press secretary said the complaint had been shared with congressional intelligence committees and described the claims against the director as baseless.

According to the statement, a previous inspector general review determined the whistleblower’s allegations lacked credibility. The press secretary also characterized the whistleblower as politically motivated and emphasized that Tulsi Gabbard supports whistleblowers’ legal rights, even when their claims are disputed.

The White House declined to comment further, referring inquiries back to Tulsi Gabbard’s office.

Questions Over Timing and Oversight

Former intelligence officials have noted that it is highly unusual for a whistleblower complaint to take several months to reach Congress. While an official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said there is no statutory deadline for transmitting such complaints, critics argue that long delays weaken transparency and accountability.

The ODNI has said Gabbard was not aware of her responsibility to provide security guidance for transmitting the complaint until a new inspector general took office later in the year. Once informed, officials say, she acted promptly to address the issue.

Lawmakers Call for Compliance With the Law

Senate Intelligence Committee leaders have emphasized the importance of protecting whistleblowers and ensuring Congress receives timely access to disclosures. A spokesperson for the committee’s vice chair said lawmakers expect Gabbard to uphold commitments she made during her confirmation process to safeguard whistleblowers and comply fully with the law.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between national security secrecy and democratic oversight, with the outcome likely to influence future handling of whistleblower complaints within the intelligence community.
