India’s tobacco auction system is entering a new technology-driven phase as the Tobacco Board of India partners with Constems AI to introduce AI-powered grading of FCV tobacco bales in Andhra Pradesh.
A traditionally manual step in India’s tobacco trade is getting an artificial intelligence makeover.
The Tobacco Board of India, Guntur, has partnered with deep-tech Vision AI company Constems AI Pvt. Ltd. to deploy AI-assisted grading for Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco bales across select auction platforms in Andhra Pradesh.
The move could have implications far beyond faster auctions. Because the grade assigned to a tobacco bale directly influences its market value, introducing computer vision into the process could potentially make quality assessment more consistent, transparent, and traceable for farmers, buyers, and auction officials.
AI Takes Aim at the Tobacco Grading Bottleneck
FCV tobacco grading has traditionally relied on trained human classifiers. Their expertise remains central to the process, but manual assessment can also introduce differences in judgment when large quantities of tobacco need to be evaluated.
That is where Constems AI’s technology comes in.
The company’s CAInatics Vision AI engine, working alongside its proprietary 3N Large Vision Modal Model (LVMM), will analyse images of tobacco bales from different sources and generate grading outputs.
The results are designed to appear instantly through a grader’s mobile application.
The system evaluates visual characteristics including color, texture or grain, and visible leaf condition, producing individual parameter scores alongside an overall grade.
The objective is not simply to replace a manual process with software. Instead, the collaboration aims to create a technology-supported framework that can apply the Tobacco Board’s existing visual grading parameters more consistently.
Why Farmers Could Be the Biggest Beneficiaries
For tobacco growers, grading is not just an administrative step. It can directly affect the price their produce commands at auction.
That makes consistency particularly important.
An AI-assisted grading system could give farmers greater confidence that tobacco is being assessed against standardized visual benchmarks. Buyers and auction officials could also benefit from quicker evaluations, improved traceability and reduced variation across grading decisions.
The Tobacco Board said AI-based grading could automate the only remaining manual operation in its FCV tobacco e-auction process.
“The Tobacco Board is conducting e-auctions for the marketing of FCV tobacco, and tobacco classification is the only manual operation in the auction process,” the board’s secretary said.
The board expects successful implementation to improve transparency, consistency and efficiency while strengthening confidence among both growers and buyers.

Its technology is designed for applications spanning agriculture, manufacturing, retail, logistics, healthcare and infrastructure.
A Bigger AI Experiment for Bharat
The Tobacco Board partnership highlights an emerging trend inIndia’s AI ecosystem: moving artificial intelligence beyond chatbots and office productivity into the physical economy.
Agricultural grading, logistics, manufacturing inspection, and infrastructure monitoring all depend heavily on the interpretation of visual information.
Tobacco auctions offer a particularly significant test because the technology is being introduced at a point where an assessment can influence the economic value of a farmer’s product.
If the deployment delivers the expected consistency and speed, AI-assisted grading could serve as a model for other agricultural commodities in which visual quality assessment plays a critical role.
For now, the Andhra Pradesh tobacco auctions will serve as an important proving ground for whether Vision AI can move from impressive demonstrations to measurable on-the-ground impact.
