Atlanta’s legendary Magic City strip club is stepping into the spotlight with STARZ’s upcoming docuseries Magic City: An American Fantasy, premiering August 15. Executive produced by Drake, Jermaine Dupri, and the team at DreamCrew Entertainment, the five-part Magic City: An American Fantasy series explores how the iconic ATL jiggle joint shaped hip-hop, pop culture, and its controversial ties to crime.
A new star-studded trailer of Magic City: An American Fantasy dropped on Monday (Aug. 4), giving fans a glimpse into the neon-lit world of Magic City, with appearances from Quavo, 2 Chainz, Big Boi, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, and the club’s founder Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney.
“It’s one of the wonders of the world,” Drake declares in the teaser. “Magic City became this place for people to flourish, Black music to flourish.” The Toronto rapper’s admiration echoes the sentiment of countless artists who see Magic City not just as a club but as a cultural incubator.
Quavo didn’t hold back, crediting the club as pivotal to his career: “There wouldn’t be a Migos without Magic City.” Similarly, Big Boi of Outkast reminisces about testing early tracks like “B.O.B” in Magic City’s electrifying atmosphere, gauging the crowd’s reaction before dropping the hits to the world.
Basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal revealed in the Magic City: An American Fantasy docuseries that he inked his historic $120 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers while inside Magic City, proving the venue’s importance stretched beyond music.
But Magic City: An American Fantasy isn’t just a celebration of the club’s glittering legacy. The docuseries also unpacks the legal battles, crime infiltrations, and cultural controversies that Magic City has faced over its decades-long run. Founder Michael Barney, who served seven years in federal prison on drug conspiracy charges, offers candid insight into the struggles of maintaining an establishment that became both a cultural hub and a law enforcement target.
Kathryn Busby, STARZ’s president of original programming, emphasized the series’ cultural importance, saying, “Magic City: An American Fantasy is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture.”
Debuting at SXSW 2024, the docuseries has already generated significant buzz for its raw portrayal of Magic City’s impact on Atlanta’s nightlife and the global hip-hop scene.
With insider stories, dazzling performances, and unfiltered interviews from Quavo, 2 Chainz, Big Boi, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, TI, Big Boi and more, Drake produced Magic City: An American Fantasy promises to be an essential watch for anyone interested in how a strip club became an empire — where music careers were made, multimillion-dollar deals were signed, and history was written under the glow of stage lights.
