The Supersonics: Kolkata’s Gift to India

Many argue that Kolkata is the cultural hub of India, and The Supersonics is the perfect testament to this statement. The band has been around since the late 2000s, in their own words “they break up once a year” only to come get back together to create some of the melodies. They have an acute sense of rhythm, accentuated by their gritty bass lines and tasteful mid-song tempo changes.

The band has been placed in many genres including punk, and in an interview with soundplunge_test the band cleared the air on their generic preference. “We are essentially a rock n’ roll band. We covered classic rock bands initially, and have remained one till now. When someone says we are punk or post-punk, we laugh. The scene around music and the people who write about it and critique it is coming of age, like bands themselves. I don’t know if they are accurate or who coined punk rock for us, but our genre is rock n roll.”

The band has recorded with the legendary Indian BBC producer, Miti Adhikari, who recorded with bands like Nirvana, Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters. “Trust me, the Supersonics are as good as it gets. Their sound is no different from what’s taking place abroad. It’s a pleasure recording them,” says Adhikari.
