Sony Unveils FX2 Cinema Camera
Sony has officially announced the FX2, a groundbreaking addition to its Cinema Line that blends high-end filmmaking capabilities with robust stills performance, all at a more accessible price. Designed for hybrid creators and serious videographers, the Sony FX2 is poised to sit between the photo-focused Sony a7 IV and the video-optimised FX3, offering the best of both worlds in a compact, cinema-friendly package.
At the core of the Sony FX2 is the same 33-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R sensor found in the Sony a7 IV, paired with the Bionz XR processor. This full-frame sensor supports Dual Base ISO (800 and 4000) in S-Log3, offering up to 15 stops of dynamic range. From detailed stills to cinematic 4K video, the FX2 is tailored for creators who demand flexibility without compromise.
Built for Both Stills and Cinema
Unlike the FX30, the Sony FX2 features a mechanical shutter, providing photographers with more control and reducing rolling shutter effects. It also introduces a unique hybrid shooting mode, allowing creators to capture still images in Log mode — a rare feature in a cinema camera at this price point.
Where it truly separates from the Sony FX3 is in its 3.68-million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF), which tilts up to 90 degrees for enhanced framing flexibility. This feature alone gives the Sony FX2 an edge for creators transitioning from photography to video who still rely on an electronic viewfinder (EVF) for composing shots.
Pro-Level Video Features
Sony has integrated an impressive range of cinema features, including:
-
4K 4:2:2 10-bit All-I recording
-
Full-size HDMI
-
Anamorphic de-squeeze (1.33x and 2x)
-
Shutter angle control
-
XLR handle support
-
Dedicated record button and top-mounted controls
-
Built-in active cooling fan
The FX2 also features AI-powered autofocus and auto framing, covering subjects from humans to vehicles, and introduces Dynamic Active Mode stabilisation for smoother handheld shooting (albeit with a crop).
While the FX2 can shoot 4K at 60fps, this comes with an APS-C crop. Full-frame recording is capped at 30p. It also supports RAW video output, but only externally; internal RAW recording is not supported, even with CFexpress Type A cards.

Price and Availability
Set for an August 2025 release, the Sony FX2 is competitively priced:
-
$2,699.99 USD (body only)
-
$3,099.99 USD (with XLR handle)
That positions it between the $2,498 a7 IV and the $3,898 FX3, delivering high-end performance and 33MP resolution at a more affordable cost.
For creators seeking a hybrid powerhouse with serious video tools and a reliable stills workflow, the Sony FX2 might just be the most versatile camera of 2025.
