Lance Stroll Walks Away from Violent Dutch GP FP2 Crash as Red Flag Halts Session

Lance Stroll’s shunt carried echoes of Daniel Ricciardo’s 2023 Dutch GP crash, when the Australian broke his hand at the exact same corner during practice.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll brought out the red flags during Free Practice 2 at the Dutch Grand Prix after suffering a violent crash at the banked Turn 3 at Zandvoort. The Canadian hit the barriers with force, heavily damaging both the front-right and rear of his AMR25.

Fans and commentators held their breath given Stroll’s history of wrist injuries. However, the Canadian was quick to reassure his team, radioing, “I’m OK.” He was later seen walking in the Aston Martin garage, showing no immediate signs of pain.

Injury Concerns Linger

Lance Stroll’s crash was particularly concerning because of his past. He broke both wrists in a 2023 cycling accident, which sidelined him at the start of that season. Earlier in 2025, lingering pain forced him to withdraw from the Spanish Grand Prix for further medical treatment. He only recently declared himself “100% fit” to race again.

Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok explained on Sky Sports F1: “It’s a high-G corner with very little run-off. He went in with a lot of speed, locked up the front, and the car just didn’t turn. It’s good to hear he’s OK—this was ambition over adhesion.”

1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve added that the crash could have significant mechanical consequences: “With these heavy modern cars, the damage is extensive. They’ll need to replace the gearbox at least, and hopefully the tub is not compromised.”

Déjà Vu at Zandvoort

Lance Stroll’s shunt carried echoes of Daniel Ricciardo’s 2023 Dutch GP crash, when the Australian broke his hand at the exact same corner during practice. Thankfully, Lance Stroll avoided serious injury this time, but the crash underscores just how unforgiving Dutch GP Zandvoort’s banked turns can be.

More Drama as Albon Hits the Wall

Stroll wasn’t the only one to suffer. With just 20 minutes left in Dutch GP FP2, Alex Albon clipped the barriers at Turn 1, bringing out another red flag. Alex Albon’s Williams sustained damage to the front wing, ending his session prematurely. While less dramatic than Lance Stroll’s accident, it capped off a chaotic afternoon at Zandvoort.

The double red flag interruptions limited valuable running time ahead of what’s expected to be a rain-affected qualifying on Saturday. For Aston Martin, Stroll’s crash means a major repair job overnight, potentially with new parts required before FP3.

Meanwhile, McLaren continue to look unstoppable after dominating FP1 earlier, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri again leading the time sheets before Lance Stroll’s accident.

For local hero Max Verstappen, the focus will be on recovering momentum after a subdued start to his home race weekend.
