Amid intense battle with Flipkart and Amazon, Snapdeal-owned Shopo to shut operations

After a year and a half of operations and currently in fierce competitive battles with Amazon and Flipkart, Snapdeal acquired Shopo will close down from February 10 – as Snapdeal continues to aggressively optimise costs.

Shopo is a platform that allows for small and medium-sized businesses to chat, buy and sell on the platform on a zero-commission model.

In a blogspot, Shopo said, “We started, a year and a half ago, from a small conference room with our mission to enable small and individual sellers across India to sell online. In this short time, we have together discovered the dynamism and vibrance in the C2C space in India.”

It went on to say that their team has helped more than 2 lakh sellers start and grow their online shops. However, it also added that it would take a few more years before a “broader ecosystem to develop around the C2C segment.”

Snapdeal, who is backed by SoftBank, had acquired Shopo in 2013 and has said that all Shopo employees have been absorbed.
