HP expands Made in India profile with laptops, desktop towers, monitors etc

American computer giant HP has taken to Make in India and is manufacturing laptops, desktops, desktop towers and desktop monitors. Over the years, HP has made its mark in the country and has emerged as the top seller in India with a market share of 31.5%.




HP has expanded its Made in India profile and invested in Flex, a manufacturing partner, at Flex’s Chennai facility. Ketan Patel, Managing Director of HP in India, highlighted that the enabling environment for electronics production in India is prompting the company to strengthen its commitment. “We are investing and widening our locally made product portfolio and will not shy from making further investments as we go deeper with local manufacturing.”

Patel acknowledged that besides the growing demand in the Indian market, HP has been encouraged by the positive moves of the government. “This is the first time that HP manufacturing such a wide range of laptops in India, with products such as HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks.”

The computing major’s business in India has been growing rapidly since outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been in line with the broader industry trend. According to ToI, HP’s revenues in 2021 are likely to be nearly $3 billion. Some of the driving factors have been work-from-home, educate-from-home. This brought about a surge in demand for digital products like desktops and products. HP’s competitors Lenovo, Apple and Dell also witnessed spike in demand despite the global shortage of semiconductors.

Moreover, analyst firm IDC highlighted that HP’s India sales grew 59% in 2021. The computing giant recorded strong numbers in both the consumer and commercial segments. It also saw gains in the gaming and lifestyle segments with its range of products. HP recorded a strong traction in the small and medium business category too.

Furthermore, HP’s local push coincides with the government aggressively pitching to promote domestic manufacturing of electronics. The Centre has announced schemes like Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for IT hardware – laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers and servers, and a $10 billion scheme for localizing semiconductor production.
