Paul McCartney’s ‘Man on the Run’ Documentary Explores Life After The Beatles

The documentary follows Paul McCartney’s 2025 book, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, and complements the recent release of the Wings compilation on vinyl and streaming platforms, further cementing renewed interest in the band’s legacy.

Few artists have ever faced the daunting question Paul McCartney confronted in 1970: what comes after The Beatles? A new documentary, Man on the Run, offers an intimate, revealing look at how McCartney answered that question by forming Wings, a band that would go on to dominate the charts throughout the 1970s. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, the documentary premieres on Amazon Prime Video on February 27, 2026, and its newly released trailer delivers a deeply personal portrait of reinvention, resilience, and creative freedom.

From the Ashes of The Beatles to a New Beginning

After The Beatles’ breakup, Paul McCartney initially released two solo albums but soon found himself longing for the collaborative spirit of a band. Wings emerged from that desire, co-founded with his wife Linda McCartney, alongside Denny Laine and Denny Seiwell.

In the trailer, Paul McCartney reflects candidly on the period following the split. “The Beatles had been my whole life,” he admits. “When we split up, I thought I’d never write another note of music.” Instead, Wings became a creative rebirth — one that produced classics like “Band on the Run,” “My Love,” “Jet,” and “Live and Let Die.”

“It Was About Freedom”

One of the film’s central themes is freedom — artistic, emotional, and personal. “When we started Wings, it was about freedom,” Paul McCartney says in the trailer. Initially dismissed by critics and fans alike, the band struggled to gain acceptance. McCartney recalls making a vow during that time: “I’m going to make the best record you’ve ever heard.”

That determination paid off. Wings eventually scored five No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, filled stadiums worldwide, and became one of the most successful bands of the decade before disbanding in 1981.

Love, Loss, and Linda McCartney

Beyond the music, Man on the Run places significant focus on Paul and Linda McCartney’s enduring partnership. Through rare home videos and unseen archival footage, the film chronicles their shared life, creativity, and unwavering support for each other.

“I felt very depressed, but I was very lucky because I had Linda,” McCartney narrates. The couple remained together for nearly three decades, until Linda’s death in 1998, making their story one of rock’s most profound love narratives.

Reflecting on John Lennon and The Beatles

Paul McCartney also revisits his complicated relationship with John Lennon, acknowledging that by the end of The Beatles, they were “growing apart,” yet emphasizing, “we loved each other all our lives.” The documentary features archival appearances by Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Linda, weaving Wings’ story into the larger Beatles legacy.

The documentary follows Paul McCartney’s 2025 book, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, and complements the recent release of the Wings compilation on vinyl and streaming platforms, further cementing renewed interest in the band’s legacy.

With Man on the Run, Paul McCartney doesn’t just revisit history — he reframes it, proving that life after the biggest band in the world can still be a story worth telling.
