No “Sinners” Sequel? Warner Bros. Responds to Rumors as Ryan Coogler Stands Firm

While Coogler seems committed to leaving Sinners untouched, the film’s massive success—and its long-term profit potential—could eventually sway Warner Bros’ interest. Coogler is set to regain ownership of the IP in 25 years, per his deal with Warner Bros., which leaves the door open, eventually.

Warner Bros. has officially weighed in on the rumors swirling around a potential sequel to Sinners, the blockbuster vampire thriller directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual performance as twins Stack and Smoke. Despite its box office dominance and a seemingly open-ended conclusion, a follow-up is not currently in development.

The speculation kicked off when Production Weekly, a trusted industry tracker, listed Sinners 2 as being “in development.” The listing sent fans into a frenzy, as the original film grossed over $350 million worldwide on a $90 million budget and became an instant fan favorite thanks to its atmospheric direction, groundbreaking visuals, and powerful performances.

But hopes for a sequel were short-lived. Entertainment site Dark Horizons, after investigating the listing, reported that a Warner Bros. Discovery representative had reached out to deny the claims. The statement was clear: “It isn’t true.”

Why Everyone Thought “Sinners 2” Was Happening

Sinners ended on a note that left plenty of room for expansion, which naturally invited curiosity about what might come next. Coupled with Michael B. Jordan’s standout performance and Ryan Coogler’s history of building successful franchises (Black Panther, Creed), fans assumed another chapter was inevitable.

What added to the buzz was the original film’s critical and commercial success. With its sleek, genre-bending narrative and high production value, Sinners became a cultural moment, rare for original IPs in today’s franchise-driven market.

Ryan Coogler: “I Wanted It to Feel Like a Full Meal”

However, Ryan Coogler has long signaled that Sinners was meant to be a standalone story. In promotional interviews, the director revealed his intention to deliver a complete cinematic experience without sequel bait.

“I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrées, and desserts. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing,” Coogler said.

Having spent much of the last decade working within studio franchises, Ryan Coogler admitted he was ready to step away from that pressure and focus on telling stories that begin and end with a single film.

Could That Change in the Future?

Never say never.

For now, fans may have to accept Sinners as a singular cinematic triumph. And honestly, that might be for the best. As they say in Hollywood: Always leave them wanting more.
