DJ Quintino’s India Tour

You may have discovered him during the Sunburn Goa 2013. Dutch DJ Quintino is a fireball and he’s just embarked on a three day Mumbai-Delhi-Bangalore India tour. We caught up with the DJ for a chat on everything about being a celebrity DJ, being friends with Tiësto and Laidback Luke and the Dutch dance music scene, right before he plays at Delhi’s elite nightclub Pangaea.

How would you describe your music? Do you mix live?

I make music which I like and that resulted in a certain style in my live sets which you call the Quintino sound. Each music genre has its own charm, for me its electro/progressive house. But I don’t like to be labelled to a specific music genre, as I said before, I play music which I like, so sometimes I play various kind of music genre during my live sets.

I never have a pre-set for my shows. I know which tracks I’ve got, and I look at the audience; based on their response I decide which track I play and when. Every show is special.

EDM music coming out of Netherlands is at its zenith right now. Why do you think all you great Amsterdam producers and DJs are doing so well right now?

It’s difficult to explain or pinpoint what the exact reason why so many Dutch DJs are popular around the world. I do know that the Dutch party a lot, so they are harder to please, therefore we as DJs have to work harder and always try and give your best performance. This is now starting to pay off worldwide.

How is playing at a club different from playing in the open at a festival?
Playing at a club, festival or even a private event gives us the same sense of satisfaction. I mean obviously the size and kind of crowd is different, but if people appreciate your music, it’s a great feeling anyway!

You have played at major dance destinations from LIV and Mansion in Miami to Club Pacha in New York City as well as all over Europe. How do you connect with the crowd at different places?

I always get my inspiration during my performances and experience at gigs. I take that inspiration back to the studio and give it my own spin which results in specific music style.

One of the best experiences till date was my performance at EDC Las Vegas. It was a couple of years ago and I had to play one of the smaller stages. Five minutes before I had to start the area was still completely empty, but when I started the area started filling in so fast, it was so busy that nobody was allowed to enter the area! That was an amazing feeling, all those pure fans coming out especially for me, the atmosphere and energy was amazing. That’s why that’s still one of the best and most fun gigs I’ve played.

DJ Quintino

“The EDM scene has picked up all over the world, and I’m really kicked to be playing in Delhi.”

Tell us about your association with Laidback Luke, Afrojack and Tiësto?

I’ve been extremely lucky as far as my career path goes. The first time I met Luke was at a party, where I was supposed to play right after him. He stayed during my entire set and just seeing him watch made me nervous. Later he came up to me personally and told me what a good time he had had. He told me to stay in touch, and that’s how it started.

Tiësto has always been one of my biggest inspirations. And when I got the chance to play on Afrojack’s Jacked tour in 2012 and with Tiësto on his college Invasion tour – 2013, it was insane! There’s just been no looking back since!

Tell us about your previous experiences of playing in India? What do you think of India as an EDM destination?

I was the Sunburn Goa 2013 headliner, that’s the only time I’ve played in India. The EDM scene has picked up all over the world, and I’m really kicked to be playing in Delhi for the first time, at Pangaea this Friday! I can’t wait to show my fans a good time.

How is it like being a celebrity DJ?

I started out to follow my passion which remains music. I am happy I am getting to do something I love and it’s even better that people are enjoying my music. Also, being a famous DJ has its perks as more and more people listen to my music. That is both inspiring and motivating.

Are you planning to move to Los Angeles, like a lot of famous Dutch producers?

No, no such plans yet.
