Indian media have received their fair share of flak from the home grown audience but things took a turn for the worse when Nepal Twitterati expressed their anger over the callous behaviour shown by the reporters covering the recent Nepal earthquake. Over 144,000 Nepalese Twitter users have already tweeted the trending hashtag #GoHomeIndianMedia.
This outrage is the result of the alleged ‘insensitive conduct’ that Indian journalists have caused. From reports of shoving microphones and cameras to grieving victims to causing obstruction to rescue and relief efforts, the Indian media has acted poorly in such a tragic event of monumental proportions. Reports say that the death toll due to the disaster may cross 10,000.
One must look at the bright side at give credit where it is due. Indian media were the first to reach the tragedy-stricken nation and broadcasted the damage caused all over the world. This caused a nationwide movement to provide relief to the earthquake survivors that included everyone from school kids to Bollywood celebrities.
When does journalism cross the silver lining and turn into a dangerous and cold-hearted practice? The nature of some of the tweets surely makes one wonder how journalism can become a relentless assault on the senses. Indians too have condemned the harsh actions of Indian media.
