Music vs. Musician Vol I

In the wide world of indie music, there is a lot of variety on offer, and your taste in music defines you as a person. As a hipster. A metalhead. A rocker. A lounge piranha. But what if the musicians themselves were to tell you where all their minds wandered off to when listening to music? What if a Palash Sen listens to hip-hop to let off steam? Or metal was Adele’s guilty pleasure?

Kicking off our new series on musicians who talk about the ‘other’ genre in their musical lives, this is going to be quite the bag full of surprises. We start with Sahil Makhija, (Demonstealer) of Demonic Resurrection and Reptilian Death, the godfather of Indian metal and the creator of lethally delish bacon dishes. Nuff said.

On what made his world rock before metal

I guess rock would be what I would listen to besides metal, because I pretty much listen to only metal. Maybe some Aerosmith, some Def Leppard, Jethro Tull, that kind of stuff basically.

On Bollywood and the Spice Girls… wait what?

As a kid I was very hung-up on Bollywood music till fourth or fifth standard. And then I got into a huge techno and pop music phase. After that I got into metal and there was no looking back.

My techno phase happened when I was in the sixth standard or seventh standard. I was in love with  and I used to listen to all these random techno cds that I had – Mission Impossible, Mortal Combat, other bands and pop songs. I did have my boy band and Spice Girls phase where I would listen to a lot of them.

Tridev on Cassette

Bollywood was when I was in seventh or eighth or something. I wanted to be a film actor and I think it went hand-in-hand. I remember I used to love the soundtrack of Tridev. At that time, it was about what movie is releasing, listening to it’s music and buying those cassettes. That was on the top of my list. The song “Oye Oye!” was quite the favourite.

I have not really revisited that phase in serious listening. Occasionally if something pops up I might listen to it for five minutes before going aaaach!

How to avoid Bollywood music in Bombay – Shut Yourself In

I have not listened to any Bollywood music in current times AT ALL. If people force me to listen to some songs to make me believe how bad it is –some Katrina Kaif song that’s all I’ve heard.

I am at home all the time, and there is no one around me, so it is easy actually. I don’t have any Bollywood songs playing in my house. That said, I actually know a lot of them personally, say I know Vishal (Dadlani) is a good singer and a good composer. I know Ehsaan and Loy are good at what they do.
