The Stooges’ Drummer Dies at 64
Michigan-based punk rock band the Stooges’ drummer Scott Asheton died on Saturday, March 15 at the age of 64 due to an unspecified disease. Iggy Pop, vocalist of the band (also known as Iggy and the Stooges), broke the news on his Facebook page the next day saying, “My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night”. He followed up the death ceremony by playing a grand tribute set to his band-mate.
On Scott’s drumming, Iggy Pop’s poignant words were, “Scott was a great artist. I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton.”
Scott Asheton was one of the co-founders of the band in 1967 accompanied by his brother Ron Asheton. However, after the much spoken-about split-up in 1974 the world saw a re-emergence in 2003. Though, Scott decided to drop out of the band in 2010 after encountering a mild stroke. But he was soon seen behind the drum kit a year later and also played for their latest 2013 LP Ready to Die.
Here’s a remembrance of The Stooges from its latest LP Ready to Die.
