Tate McRae Covers Drake’s “Shot For Me” at Toronto Soundcheck — and Drake Responds

Canadian pop sensation Tate McRae paid homage to fellow hometown icon Drake during her Miss Possessive World Tour stop in Toronto this week, surprising fans with an acoustic cover of his 2011 track “Shot For Me.”

During her soundcheck on August 20 at Rogers Arena, McRae swapped the moody production of the original song from Drake’s Take Care album for a stripped-down guitar-led version, adding a softer, more haunting edge to the emotional ballad. She later shared the clip on TikTok with the caption: “Had to do a cover of Shot For Me by Drake in Toronto.”

Fan Reactions Pour In

Fans were quick to celebrate the cover across social media. “Didn’t know I needed this… I love it,” one wrote, while another commented, “That’s the perfect song for Toronto vibes! You nailed it!” A particularly excited fan summed up the moment with: “MY TWO WORLDS COLLIDED.”

The performance also sparked speculation about a possible collaboration. One fan noted: “Drake/Tate collab would be iconic.”

Drake Shows Love Back

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed by the 6ix god himself. Drake reposted Tate McRae’s clip on his Instagram story, adding two emojis — “😮💨 🤩” — signaling his approval.

This isn’t the first time Drake has acknowledged Tate McRae. Earlier this year, he referenced her on his track “Small Town Fame” from his joint project with PartyNextDoor, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, rapping: “B—h, I feel like Tate McRae.”

Tate McRae’s Ongoing Canadian Tour

The Toronto stop was just one of several Canadian dates on Tate McRae’s tour. She continues this week with shows at Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre on August 22 and Montreal’s Bell Centre on August 23.

Tate McRae has also been making a habit of covering Canadian artists during her soundchecks. Earlier this month in Vancouver, she performed Justin Bieber’s “Yukon” and “Walking Away” across two nights, earning praise from fans for embracing her Canadian roots.

A Possible Collaboration?

With Drake now publicly co-signing her “Shot For Me” cover, fans are already buzzing about the possibility of a collaboration between the two artists. Both Tate McRae and Drake have dominated global charts, and their shared Canadian heritage could make for one of the year’s most talked-about musical pairings.

For now, Tate McRae’s Toronto soundcheck moment is a reminder of her ability to blend vulnerability and artistry while paying tribute to the icons who paved the way before her. And if Drake’s reaction is any indication, this might just be the beginning of a bigger crossover moment between the two stars.
