These three friends founded Zenatix to address the age-old issue of energy efficiency in India
“You may build something that you think will solve the problem but it may not be the right solution. Which means, that you need to iterate multiple times – like we did.”
Founded by Rahul Bhalla, Amarjeet Singh and Vishal Bansal, Zenatix is an energy data analytics company that aims to provide energy management and analytics solutions. The three friends always wanted to start something for themselves and when they finally felt the time was right, in 2013, they all hopped on board never to turn back.
The friendship between the three co-founders goes back to their college days in IIT Delhi, and it is this 18-year-old relationship that sometimes leaves them less critical of each other than they should be. Mr. Singh admits that they do “get a little more relaxed and may not question the thought process of the other person.” Due to paucity of time, they sometimes just tell each other to go ahead with whatever the decision is and the required support will be met with. However, this is due to the trust they have built from working together for so many years, calling it “the best thing.”
Zenatix raised their first round of funding in 2015 from some very reputed angels in India, including Snapdeal’s founders – Rohit Bansal and Kunal Bahl – Rajan Anandan, Rahul Khanna and more. Later they also proceeded to get investments in a small seed round followed by a pre-series A round. Vishal says, “We are fortunate, we managed to raise about 8 crores from Pi Ventures and Blume Ventures.”
Zenatix is working on delivering energy efficiency in the existing infrastructure and making it smart. In order to answer this, they came up with ‘WattMan’, a fully automated energy control and monitoring product. The WattMan device and its smart system manages to control major electrical loads for retail outlets and stores, bank branches and the like. This makes it a centralised, controlled platform for operations for electrical assets bringing about optimised energy efficiency. WattMan also measures real-time consumption and temperature for compliance purposes, Mr. Bhalla adds, “Eventually we use a lot of machine learning and artificial intelligence.”
Zenatix offers their products and services on a subscription-based model, according to the team, their customers can become cash-flow positive from the first month itself.
The Zenatix team believes that becoming an entrepreneur just to be your own boss is not a sustainable reason. One needs to be passionate about the problem one is looking to solve. “You may build something that you think will solve the problem but it may not be the right solution. Which means, that you need to iterate multiple times – like we did,” Amarjeet points out.
