Placement centres in Goa to boost start-up community

Goa’s computer engineering colleges and its students are now accepting the offer to work for start-ups for the welfare of the state. While higher payment packages and the names of big MNCs certainly lure students to bigger IT metros, the advantage of working for local start-ups  results in a far more superior experience and also lets employees work closer to their local homes.

The Goa IT Innovation Centre (GITIC) launched a recruitment drive where more than 50 graduates from the IT industry, engineering, computer science and telecom appeared. Incidentally, many of them had offer letters from renowned MNCs like Infosys and Wipro.

“In a startup, the energy is a lot more and the responsibility higher,” GITIC director Jervis Pereira said.

According to Niyan Marchon, placement officer PCCE, out of the 52 students, 40 students have been shortlisted.

The interest shown by the students can be related to the fact that it is convenient for them to work close to their families while having the option of pursuing further studies.
Pereira confessed that the awareness of local start-ups is low but he expects this interest to grow in the future years. Marchon further adds that while the paychecks might not be as big as the ones found at MNCs, the attention and exposure that students get at start-ups is a great learning experience that can help them in future.

Knowledge Ashram, Kaavay, DCCPER and Prudent Bay were the four start-ups that participated in the recruitment drive. Moreover, a few weeks ago, Genora, another Goa-based start-up had recruited students from the same state.
