Trump Calls for ‘Nationalized Voting’ as Government Shutdown Nears Resolution

Donald Trump reignited controversy on Monday by urging Republicans to support what he described as “nationalized voting,” while congressional leaders worked urgently to finalize a deal to end the partial federal government shutdown.

The remarks came during a media interview in which Trump again referenced Georgia’s election system, echoing long-standing claims about election integrity that have remained politically divisive since the 2020 presidential race.

Election Claims Return to the Spotlight

Trump’s comments on voting coincided with heightened scrutiny surrounding Fulton County, Georgia, after federal agents conducted a controversial operation at a local election office last week. According to multiple reports, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard connected Trump directly with some of the agents involved, a move that has raised concerns among critics about the politicization of election-related investigations.

While the administration has defended the action as lawful, civil rights groups and Democratic lawmakers have questioned its timing and optics.

Shutdown Deal Gains Momentum

Behind the scenes, Trump has been actively lobbying Republicans to support a funding package that would reopen the government. After meetings with the president, two key GOP holdouts—Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Tim Burchett signaled they may allow the bill to advance.

Their resistance had centered on demands to attach the SAVE Act, a voter identification proposal, to the funding legislation. While House leadership declined to include the measure, Trump reportedly secured informal commitments from senators to pursue it separately, easing tensions within the party. Speaker Mike Johnson, navigating a razor-thin majority, emphasized the urgency of reopening the government, warning that internal divisions could hand leverage to Democrats.

Epstein Files Spark Justice Department Response

The Justice Department also faced renewed scrutiny following the release of millions of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged errors in redacting sensitive information and reiterated that the department does not plan further charges.

“It’s not a crime to attend a party,” Todd Blanche said, responding to public backlash over names mentioned in the documents.

Trump himself urged the department to move forward, telling reporters it was time to focus on other priorities.

Foreign Policy and Domestic Announcements

Adding to the day’s developments, Trump said he is in discussions with Cuban officials, referred to the island nation as a “failed state,” and confirmed upcoming talks with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. He also announced the creation of a new government-critical minerals reserve, dubbed “Project Vault.”

As Washington moves closer to reopening the government, Trump’s latest statements underscore how election policy, legal controversies, and legislative brinkmanship continue to intersect in his presidency—setting the stage for an increasingly contentious political year ahead.
