Amazon India launches Amazon Pantry for grocery and household products

Aiming to increase the sales of bulk packs of monthly and weekly grocery and household essentials, Amazon India has rolled out its new initiative, Amazon Pantry, where users can avail next day grocery and household products.

This initiative is expected to give a tough competition to modern retail chains like Big Bazaar and Spencer’s.

Currently, the service is available only in select areas of Hyderabad, but the company has plans to scale it up nationwide, based on the experience.

While it is accessible to all in India, in the global format only those customers who are part of Amazon Prime, which is a paid subscription service recently debuted in India, are accessible.

Amazon Pantry is replicating an online supermarket model that delivers up to 15 kg of products. The products will include large packs of atta, rice, pulses, edible oils and other staples. Home deliveries and shipping orders in a day will cost Rs 20.

Amazon had launched a local grocery service called KiranaNow in Bangalore on March last year. The service would deliver grocery in only 2-4 hours and between 9am to 6pm. The Amazon Now that was launched in March this year was extending its grocery delivery service to an app.

Amazon India has invested in six new fulfilment centres (FC’s) earlier to this in meeting the demands of its seller base in the country. New fulfillment centres will be set up in Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai.

Prior to this in February, it also launched a unique initiative to help small & medium businesses (SMBs) to sell on its platform through Amazon Tatkal.
