PM launches first Indian channel dedicated to farmers

On the first anniversary of the NDA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Doordarshan’s 24×7 channel DD Kisan – a channel dedicated solely to Indian farmers. During the launch, Mr. Modi encouraged farmers to improve the average foodgrain yield from the current two tonnes per hectare to three tonnes per hectare. He also stressed on making ‘tehsil’ the unit of agricultural planning and development.

Indian farmers have been facing troubled times which has slowed down the rural economy substantially. Speaking on the matter, the PM said that India’s growth will boom if villages progress from their agricultural advancements. To aid this progress, DD Kisan will inform farmers about changes in climate and global economy. This will eventually help farmers in planning their cultivation efficiently.

The channel will deal with distributing information about new farming techniques, water conservation and organic farming along with other agriculture-related news and knowledge.

This is not the first time that such an initiative has been taken for the betterment of Indian farmers and agricultural development of the country. Public broadcaster “Prasar Bharti” has been running the “Krishi Darshan” program on Doordarshan since January 26, 1967 making it one of the longest running programmes on DD National. Whether DD Kisan improves the conditions of Indian farmers – that is something that only time will tell.
