Lok Sabha passes Farm Laws Repeal Bill without any discussion

The Lok Sabha on Monday cleared the Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021 amid sloganeering by opposition MPs who wanted discussion around the bill. The bill was passed by voice vote.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is ready to discuss all issues and answer all questions but the dignity of Parliament and the Chair should be maintained. With 36 bills in the fray this season, the Lok Sabha passed the Farm Laws Repeal Bill as soon as the Winter Session convened without any discussion.

Reacting to the development, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait said: “This (Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021 passed by Lok Sabha) is a tribute to all 750 farmers who lost their lives during the agitation.”

“The protest will continue as other issues including MSP are still pending,” he added.

The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, will repeal three farm laws – the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

On November 19 in his address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the constitutional process to repeal these laws would be completed during the Parliament Session that would start at the end of this month.

“It seems some of the farmers are still not convinced by our sincere efforts. We have decided to repeal the three farm laws. The constitutional process to repeal these laws would be completed during the Parliament Session that would start at the end of this month,” the Prime Minister had said.

Last week, the Union cabinet had approved ‘The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021’. The three farms laws were passed by Parliament during the monsoon session last year.
