Microsoft announces discontinuation of Xbox 360.

A golden era comes to end as Microsoft announced that they were discontinuing their most popular and iconic system, the Xbox 360.

Released 11 years back in 2005, Xbox 360 has sold over 84 million units. The sad news comes just after the celebrations of its tenth anniversary. A gaming legend though, it is an inescapable truth that Xbox 360 can no longer compete with the new age gaming consoles that have upheld the game playing experience to the next level, where virtual reality and improved 4K engines are just the tip of the iceberg.

According to Microsoft, they are unable to continue the production of a console that is now well over a decade old. The future of the company lies with the Xbox 360’s younger brother and its role in the next generation of video games.

Phil Spencer, the current head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, told media, “While we’ve had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. It is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. We will continue to sell existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles, with availability varying by country.”

For the fans, however, the good news is that Xbox 360 game servers will be staying online and Microsoft will continue to offer 360 supports online for now. It is however quite noticeable that that eventually the need to support the 360 will be nullified if everyone plays the 360 games off the newer system.

Spencer added, “The Xbox 360 helped redefine an entire generation of gaming at Microsoft. I am incredibly proud of all of the work and dedication that went into development of the Xbox 360 hardware, services, and games portfolio over the last decade. And I’m grateful to the fans for their continued passion and support.”

Over the last decade Xbox 360 has offered some mind boggling gaming experience that will forever be ingrained in our memory. Its innovative Gamerscore launch turned the world into an inclusive points table, for which gamers will forever be indebted to it.
