Book Adaptation
Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried Bring Twists and Tension in The Housemaid Trailer
The first trailer for The Housemaid has arrived, and it’s already making waves as one of the most anticipated book-to-film adaptations of the year. Directed by Paul Feig and based on the 2022 viral novel by Freida McFadden, the psychological thriller stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried in a chilling domestic mystery set to hit theatres on December 19, 2025.
Sydney Sweeney plays Millie Calloway, a young woman hired as a live-in maid by the wealthy but enigmatic Winchester family. Amanda Seyfried takes on the role of Nina Winchester, the seemingly perfect wife and mother whose polished life hides dark secrets. From the opening moments — Nina screaming inside her car — the trailer signals the unraveling of a picture-perfect suburban dream.

What the Trailer Reveals
Set against a haunting rendition of Sabrina Carpenter’s hit “Please Please Please”, the trailer teases betrayal, obsession, and danger lurking behind closed doors. A coroner is spotted outside the mansion, a locked brown door begs questions, and the chemistry between Millie and Nina’s husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar) hints at a forbidden romance.
The tagline “Discover what lies behind closed doors” plays with double meaning, emphasising that not everything in the Winchester household is as it appears.
The marketing campaign for The Housemaid has fueled the buzz with cryptic teasers on TikTok. Short clips of gates opening, doors closing, and unsettling voiceovers from Seyfried’s Nina created an atmosphere of dread weeks before the full trailer dropped.
One teaser featured Amanda Seyfried saying, “I want you to feel safe here,” as the camera focused on a locked door. Another showed Sydney Sweeney whispering, “I do not want to go back.” Fans of the novel instantly recognized these as nods to key plot twists, while newcomers were left speculating.
Cast and Characters
Alongside Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, the film stars Michele Morrone (365 Days) as Enzo the groundskeeper, Indiana Elle as the Winchesters’ daughter Cecilia, and Brandon Sklenar (1923) as Andrew Winchester. Together, they round out the suburban tableau that slowly morphs into a psychological battleground.
At CinemaCon earlier this year, Seyfried revealed that portraying Nina was unlike any role she had taken on before: “I went to places I never thought I’d go to. We played some wacky stuff — and weren’t expecting to.”
For her part, Sweeney told People that Millie is “the type of character I love to play: complex, strong, and with a little something up her sleeve.”

The Housemaid Winter’s Breakout Thriller?
With its mix of psychological suspense, toxic secrets, and TikTok-fueled hype, The Housemaid is poised to be more than just another book adaptation. McFadden’s novel went viral thanks to its shocking twists, and Feig’s adaptation promises to bring that same pulse-pounding tension to the big screen.
Audiences will have to wait until December 19 to discover just what lies behind the Winchesters’ closed doors — but if the trailer is any indication, the answers won’t come quietly.
