LimeWire Outbids Ryan Reynolds to Acquire Fyre Festival Brand in Shocking Comeback
The original 2017 Fyre Festival promised luxury villas, star-studded performances, and exotic island glamour. What guests received instead were disaster-relief tents, cancelled performances, and the now-infamous cheese sandwiches served in styrofoam containers. Over 500 attendees were stranded in the Bahamas, sparking multiple lawsuits and two documentaries (FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened on Netflix and Fyre Fraud on Hulu).
In a plot twist that no one saw coming, LimeWire—once the internet’s most infamous peer-to-peer file-sharing platform—has officially acquired the rights to the Fyre Festival brand. The deal, sealed on eBay for just under $250,000, outbid none other than Ryan Reynolds’ creative agency, Maximum Effort.
The revelation ends months of speculation after Fyre Fest founder and convicted fraudster Billy McFarland announced the brand’s sale earlier this year. While Billy McFarland lamented the low price, he claimed he was shifting focus to a “tech platform designed to capture and power the value behind every view online.”

Limewire acquires Fyre Festival
From Piracy to Fyre: A Match Made in Meme Heaven
Confirming the acquisition in a press release, LimeWire CEO Julian Zehetmayr said the move is about “saving one of the internet’s most infamous cultural memes from extinction.”
“LimeWire’s acquisition is not about repeating past mistakes—it’s about turning the Fyre brand into something new. Fyre became a symbol of hype gone wrong, but it also made history,” Julian Zehetmayr explained. He added, “We’re not bringing the festival back—we’re bringing the brand and the meme back to life. This time with real experiences, and without the cheese sandwiches.”

Ryan Reynolds Joins the Banter
While LimeWire celebrates, Ryan Reynolds took the loss with his signature humor. In a statement shared via Rolling Stone, the Deadpool star quipped: “Congrats to LimeWire for their winning bid for Fyre Fest. I look forward to attending their first event but will be bringing my own palette of water.”
Ryan Reynolds’ involvement highlights just how deeply the Fyre Festival fiasco remains embedded in pop culture—a cautionary tale turned cultural meme.
Fyre Festival: A Scam for the Ages
For those who need a refresher, the original 2017 Fyre Festival promised luxury villas, star-studded performances, and exotic island glamour.
Billy McFarland was later convicted of wire fraud and sentenced to six years in prison, serving four before his 2022 release. His attempt to revive the concept as “Fyre Fest II” quickly collapsed under scrutiny.
For LimeWire, which reinvented itself as a crypto platform in 2022, the purchase marks a strange but fitting evolution. Once synonymous with internet piracy, now paired with the most infamous failed festival of all time, the brand is betting on irony, tech-savvy reinvention, and meme culture to stay relevant.
Whether this gamble will work—or simply add another layer of infamy to the Fyre name—remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the internet will be watching.
