Subir Malik on his passion for all things Parikrama
Subir Malik – Parikrama’s Brick In The Wall
Subir Malik on all that drives him in life, from being top keyboardist of the country and band member of Parikrama to successfully establishing Parikrama Inc.
Subir’s is a face you won’t forget easily. Often to be found in his signature psychedelic, tie-and-dye tee shirts, the tough weather-worn face is embellished with a luxurious moustache that seems to descend from a similar moustache-maketh-a-man principle as of Utpal Dutt in Golmaal. John Lennon glasses adorn keen, searching eyes, and a luxurious mane is often pulled back to reveal a broad proud Martian forehead. The Parikrama website will have you believe, and we quote, “He is the driving force behind the band… he drives them nuts!” Light hearted banter about each other are telling signs of how the band goes around ribbing amongst themselves in good humour yet there is no denying the fact that Subir has been crucial in Parikrama’s success; he has been the backbone of Parikrama as the band manager, founder and keyboardist of the band for the past 22 years. Not only that, he established a successful artist management company Parikrama Inc. and a music school apart from devoting his time to Parikrama the past 22 years.
Subir’s treasured possession remains his Kurzwell K2661 and a Hammond XB2. Nothing will do for him but these when he’s performing or composing, unless sometimes, it is his brother’s Korg Triton Extreme. Music remains Parikrama’s only goal may well be validated by the fact that Subir calls them a live band, with all their music being available for free on their website.
Passion and control go hand-in-hand when it comes to Subir. While he is open to and even welcomes Parikrama’s music changing over the years, he stands uncompromised on how all the money Parikrama earns must be used to make the band better. It is all about the fun, and music which drives their soul. And Subir Malik, crème-da-la-creme rocker of the contemporary rock scene will tell you it has never been better for Indian rock.
