David Bowie and The Space Oddity : Loss of The Rock n Roll legend

The world of music is still mourning the loss of a legend: David Bowie. The British singer, songwriter, producer, and actor passed away at the age of 69, fighting terminal liver cancer. Millions have been sending messages of tribute to their music idol for many years. Many grew up listening to his songs, and many more continue to be inspired by his music.

Born in south London in 1947,  David Bowie’s biggest claim to fame was the 1969 single ‘Space Oddity’. He also gained repute as a rock star through his on-stage persona of ‘Ziggy Stardust’, famous for his wild costumes, sounds, and flamboyant lifestyle.

His last album was released only recently, on his birthday, January 08. The album, “Blackstar,” was produced in collaboration with a jazz quartet and was typically enigmatic and exploratory. It will be a treat for millions of his fans.

His fame earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. On March 31, he will be honoured with a concert at Carnegie Hall featuring the Roots, Cyndi Lauper, and the Mountain Goats.

When it came to his characteristics, David Bowie reflected his persona. He wrote songs that reflected the sentiment of an outsider: an alien, a misfit, a sexual adventurer, a faraway astronaut. His specialization was blending music genres like rock, cabaret, and jazz. His music themes also included inspiration from real-life drama, which translated into pop hits like “Let’s Dance.”

Bowie gained admiration from the entire music industry, which includes admiration and emulation across the musical spectrum — from rockers, balladeers, punks, hip-hop acts, creators of pop spectacles and even classical composers like Philip Glass, who based two symphonies on Bowie’s albums “Low” and “Heroes.”
